Rule 174 of the Highway Code

Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (see ‘Road markings’). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.

Law TSRGD schedule 9 parts 7 and 8

BOX JUNCTION

• Light controlled or not? Be sure you understand who has priority.
• Legalities of stopping in one.
• Ahead and left no go unless there is space for their car to have cleared the box fully.
• Right turn only may enter if exit lane is clear.
• Stop at stop line on red.
• Proceed forward to turn point on green.
• Priority is always with all oncoming traffic unless filter light is on but proceed with caution once it does illuminate.
• Inductive loops set in the road to detect vehicles may not always work, which means the filter arrows may not come on and lights will go        back to red without filter illuminating first. If you have already proceeded into the yellow box and the light goes back to red without a filter      light coming on, you MUST proceed into your road otherwise you will be blocking the box junction. However, be cautious as you proceed.
• If lights do not have filter arrows always proceed with caution especially if turning right.
• Fixed Penalty Notice for stopping in a box is now controlled by local council enforcement.
• At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.
